Building a Strong Platform

16-Jan-2019

At the recent Operational Excellence (OPEX) Summit in Houston, I had the opportunity to engage with a broad range of experts across the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors regarding the successes and challenges on the journey to delivering operational excellence. Much optimism was shared about streamlined processes and new digital technologies that are delivering gains, bringing us a giant step forward in our collective desire for increased efficiency. With oil currently trading at a price about 15 percent lower than before the downturn, these aren’t just good ideas for our industry; they are essential steps to transform and secure the future of our industry. And we need to keep building on them.

During our session, Paul Danos – owner of our Joint Venture Partner, Danos – and I talked to delegates. We spoke about the power of combining traditional methods to enhance efficiency, with digital technologies and a winning culture, to deliver exceptional results. Our message is clear – we must optimize operations by using every tool available to establish a strong platform from which to apply digital transformation, otherwise we risk creating confusion rather than efficiency. The message was well received by those in the room, striking a familiar chord.

For me, a key takeaway from the event was an emphasis on people. There is potential to view technology and the worker at odds with one another. Instead, we must lead well and build an engaging culture, so that our people become the catalyst for change. As well as strengthening existing efficient work practices, we’ll be reliant on their skill, creativity and effort to develop new innovative solutions as they become the digitally enabled workforce of the future.

In a workplace that is changing rapidly, we need to foster a flexible culture that provides the foundation and strength for our people to push forward, and the resilience to adapt. I am excited to continue this discussion over a networking breakfast on Thursday, February 7 at the Deepwater Operations and Topsides, Platforms and Hulls Conference in Galveston, Texas. I hope you’ll join us at the conference as we continue together to maximize operational excellence as an industry.
